Sea Turtle Conservancy

Topics include: Conservation; Ocean Literacy; Sea Turtles

Country/Region: Caribbean

The Sea Turtle Conservancy, formerly known as the Caribbean Conservation Corporation, is the world’s oldest sea turtle research and conservation group. An international nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization, Sea Turtle Conservancy was founded in 1959 by world-renowned sea turtle expert Dr. Archie Carr to save sea turtles from imminent extinction through rigorous science-based conservation.

Headquartered in Florida, the organization carries out worldwide programs to conserve and recover sea turtle populations through research, education, advocacy and protection of the natural habitats upon which they depend. Over the course of over 60 years, Sea Turtle Conservancy’s research programs have yielded much of what is now known about sea turtles and the threats they face, and the organization is applying this knowledge to carry out the world’s most successful sea turtle protection and recovery programs.

National Audubon Society

Topics include: Climate Change; Conservation; Policy/Governance; Seabirds

Country/Region: Canada; Carribbean; Latin America; USA

Audubon protects birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow. Across aisles. Across landscapes. Across borders. When it comes to our environment, birds are a uniting force. Birds cross borders, from neighborhoods to states and beyond, migrating tens of thousands of miles across multiple countries from one tip of the planet to the other. And so do we. Audubon's hemispheric approach recognizes that the majority of bird species in the Americas migrate annually between Canada, the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Audubon’s programs are like the birds—unencumbered by political boundaries and seamlessly integrated across the Western Hemisphere.

Mexican Caribbean Manta Ray Project

Topics include: Elasmobranch (Sharks, Rays, Skates)

Country/Region: Caribbean-Wide; Mexico

We are a registered Non-Profit Organization under Mexican Law.

The Manta Caribbean Project is dedicated to taking a multidisciplinary approach to the conservation of manta and mobulid rays, and their habitat in the Caribbean Sea through robust science and research, while raising awareness and providing education to the community and stakeholders.// Located in the northern Yucatan Peninsula, the transition zone of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea is thriving with life.

Driven by the deep currents of the Yucatan Channel, the nutrient rich waters support a high biodiversity of marine life. With these upwellings comes huge blooms of plankton that attract a range of species from small molluscs to the larger animals such as sea turtles, birds and marine mammals.

This feeding frenzy also attracts the world’s largest fish, the whale shark and of course the curious ocean giants, the manta ray. Both deceptively large animals are filter feeders and come to the area annually to feast upon the plankton buffet.

The Manta Caribbean Project aims to identify and conduct research on the poorly understood populations of mobulids in the Mexican Caribbean.
