Funding
First Overseas Conference Travel Fund from New Zealand Marine Sciences Society. The First Overseas Conference Travel Fund (FOCTF) was established by members of the Society to help young researchers present their work at an overseas conference. The Society recognises that New Zealand’s geographic isolation can disadvantage emerging researchers. Outstanding research deserves to be disseminated in global venues and events, and researchers must interact with other professionals to further their knowledge and careers as marine scientists. The FOCTF was established to achieve these goals. The number and value of awards allocated following each of the two application deadlines will be at the discretion of the council, and dependent on available funds. The award may not be made if there are no suitable applicants. Awards for conferences in the Pacific (including Australia) will not exceed NZ$1500.Deadline August 15 2026
WAVEMAKER Marine Conservation Startup Award from the SUBMARINER Network and funded by EIT Water. The award celebrates business ideas that are making marine protection and nature restoration more efficient and effective. Any European start-up and spin-off working in this field can apply, and five finalists will be selected for the award ceremony. Of those, three winners will receive a one-year membership to EIT Water, the new EU innovation community for the water sector. The membership opens doors to funding opportunities, business support and partners across Europe.Deadline August 20 2026
Our Shared Ocean – Mobility and Travel Grants 2026 (for SIDS) from Marine Institute. Deadline September 3 2026
Scottish Learning Fund from Sea-Changers. The aim of the new Scottish Learning Fund is to enable early-stage and / or small community-based groups in Scotland who are involved in marine conservation activities to learn, share knowledge, network and develop skills with other groups.

The MATE ROV Competition. Each year, the MATE ROV competition challenges students to build an ROV to tackle tasks based on the real world. From simulating missions to explore Jupiter’s moon Europa to diving on hydrothermal vents and determining the identification on an unknown shipwreck, the MATE ROV competition allows students from college and university students down to elementary students to build an ROV with a specific goal in mind.
Sea Experience in Shipboard Oceanography. For aspiring oceanographers, experience aboard a working research vessel offers a foundation in the more practical aspects of conducting science at sea. The Sea Experience in Shipboard Oceanography (SESO) program at ASU BIOS (Arizona State University-Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences) on the island of Bermuda allows graduate students and early career scientists who are actively engaged in ocean sciences to fully participate in a 5-day Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) research cruise aboard the R/V Atlantic Explorer, providing unparalleled insight into the logistics required to plan and execute a research cruise. Enquiries from applicants with limited access to oceanographic research cruises are particularly encouraged. Applications should be submitted at least 4 months prior to the potential cruise date.
