Turtle Island Restoration Network

Topics include: Conservation; Sea Turtles

Country/Region: USA

For 38 years, Turtle Island Restoration Network (TIRN) has been a leading advocate for the world’s oceans and marine wildlife.

Our work is based on science, fueled by people who care, and effective at catalyzing long-lasting positive change that protects the likes of green sea turtles, whale sharks and coho salmon.

By working with people and communities we preserve and restore critical habitats like the redwood-forested creekbanks of California to the biodiverse waters of Cocos Island.

We accomplish our mission through grassroots empowerment, consumer action, strategic litigation, hands-on restoration, environmental education, and by promoting sustainable local, national and international marine policies.

Mission To mobilize people in local communities around the world to protect marine wildlife and the oceans and inland watersheds that sustain them. Our work is buoyed by thousands of supporters, volunteers and pro bono professionals, who help us extend our network around the globe.

We accomplish our mission through:

Grassroots Empowerment Consumer Action Strategic Litigation Hands-on Restoration Environmental Education Promoting Sustainable Local, National, and International Marine Policies Vision We foresee a time when a critical-mass of people in communities all over the world share a common understanding of the intrinsic value of biodiversity and a permanent commitment to acting as wise, willing and able stewards of life in the earth’s oceans and on its lands.

The Leatherback Trust

Topics include: Conservation; Ocean Literacy; Sea Turtles

Country/Region: USA

The mission of The Leatherback Trust is to protect leatherback turtles, other endangered sea turtles, freshwater turtles and their ecosystems through conservation, research, management and education.

Eastern Pacific leatherback turtles are critically endangered. This population of sea turtles has declined by more than 98% since 1990. We are working to reverse this trend by tackling the 5 most deadly threats to leatherbacks and other sea turtles around the world. Our scientists conduct research at nesting beaches and at sea, collecting critical data to support conservation interventions. We partner with communities to protect nesting beaches and work with governments to inform sustainable development and fisheries management priorities.

SEATURTLE.ORG

Topics include: Sea Turtles

Country/Region: Global

Initially created as "Turtle Tidings" in 1996, SEATURTLE.ORG was founded out of a desire to support research and conservation efforts in the sea turtle community. This goal is achieved primarily through the SEATURTLE.ORG website and has included providing online access to the Marine Turtle Newsletter and supporting registration and administration of the Annual Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation. More recently, we have begun to add centralized database management systems to help organizations working to conserve sea turtles to manage, organize and share their data. These include the Satellite Tracking and Analysis System (STAT), the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation and Necropsy Database (STRAND) and the Sea Turtle Nest Monitoring System (STNMS). These tools are available for use by all sea turtle organizations.

Additional efforts include the sea turtle links, the definitive list of sea turtle resources on the web and the sea turtle news archive. SEATURTLE.ORG also provides an online home to other organizations such as the Marine Turtle Research Group, the International Sea Turtle Society, and the North Carolina Sea Turtle Project.

Topics include: Conservation; Elasmobranchs (sharks, rays, skates and sawfish); Fisheries; Ocean Literacy; Sea Turtles

Country/Region: Philippines

We are a Filipino non-government organisation dedicated to the conservation of marine megafauna. We believe science, people and knowledge are key to protect the oceans and the species that call them home. Our team, who come from different backgrounds are united by a shared passion to ensure a secure and prosperous ocean for marine life and people.

LAMAVE began in 2010 as a project with the organisation Physalus as a marine mammal research expedition in the Bohol Sea - an incredible deep water trench in Central Visayas with strong currents and upwellings. It quickly became obvious that the Bohol Sea was a hotspot for marine megafauna, hosting not only cetaceans but also whale sharks, manta rays and turtles. We thus diversified our research efforts to encompass these other marine taxa. Over time the locations of our research sites grew as well, expanding our conservation impact across the country.
