About Ocean Opportunities

Ocean Opportunities is a global careers and community resource helping people explore, build and navigate careers connected to the ocean.

The platform brings together opportunities, first-hand career experiences, organisations, professional networks, learning resources and community stories to make it easier to understand the many ways people can work with and for the ocean, and to find useful next steps along the way.

What you'll find here

Ocean careers take many forms, and there is no single route into the sector.

Ocean Opportunities helps people explore those possibilities through:

  • jobs, PhDs, postdocs, internships, funding, training and other professional opportunities

  • Career Profiles sharing what different ocean roles are really like and how people found their way into them

  • professional societies, associations and networks

  • organisations working across the ocean sector

  • citizen and community science projects that offer ways to learn, participate and gain experience

  • podcasts and other resources for exploring different fields and perspectives

  • Ocean Voices, where people from across the ocean community can share experiences, ideas and stories

There’s more to come too. Ocean Opportunities is continuing to grow, with new career resources, profiles, organisations and other tools designed to help people explore different paths through the ocean sector.

Who’s Behind It

Ocean Opportunities is built and managed by Samantha Andrews through Ocean Oculus, the ocean-focused communications consultancy.

Ocean Oculus provides communications and outreach support for ocean researchers, businesses, non-profits, associations and other organisations working across the sector.

The vision

People interested in ocean careers are often faced with information scattered across organisations, disciplines, countries and networks.

Ocean Opportunities aims to make some of that information easier to find while also showing the breadth of people, roles and routes that make up the ocean community.

Over time, the aim is to:

  • expand the range of careers, organisations, regions and languages represented

  • make opportunities and career information easier to access

  • share more first-hand experiences from people working across the sector

  • build partnerships with organisations that want to support ocean careers and professional development

  • create more ways for people to learn, connect and find their place in the ocean community

Partnerships and support

Ocean Opportunities is independently run, and partnerships, sponsorship and funding help support the time and infrastructure needed to maintain and grow the platform.

We welcome conversations with organisations interested in supporting:

  • access to ocean jobs and professional opportunities

  • career development and capacity building

  • greater visibility of different ocean careers and career pathways

  • connections between people and organisations across the sector

  • specific Ocean Opportunities projects, resources or content series

There are also opportunities for organisations to promote relevant opportunities or increase their visibility with an audience of people exploring, developing and working in ocean-related careers.

If your organisation would like to support or work with Ocean Opportunities, we'd love to hear from you.
