Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB)

Category: Biology & Ecology

Topics include: Evolutionary Biology; Organismal Biology; Functional Biology

Country/Region: Global

The mission of SICB is to further research, education and public awareness in the areas of organismal, functional and evolutionary biology. Organismal biology comprises diverse fields that lead to a better understanding of whole organism function and the interface between organisms and their physical and biological environments. Comparative morphological, developmental, physiological, behavioral and biomechanical approaches examine functional diversity and integrate the study of living and physical systems. Evolutionary and ecological approaches examine stability versus change over time, how genomes evolve, how they produce phenotypes, interact with the environment, and lead to functional diversity. SICB encourages interdisciplinary cooperative research that integrates across levels of biological organization, from molecules and cells to ecosystems, and can move beyond standard model organisms and methodologies. SICB also encourages use of new technologies that allow researchers to improve their abilities to collect and properly analyze these new and complex data sets. SICB enhances education and scholarship at all levels, from K-12 to postgraduate. The society also works to inform the public, legislators and granting agencies of the importance of organismal biology and its potential to produce valuable new knowledge, findings, applications and tools.

Country/Region: Global

Our Vision The Vision of the International Sea Turtle Society is globally robust populations of sea turtles fulfilling their ecological roles within a healthy environment, in harmonious co-existence with all Peoples.

Our Mission The Mission of the International Sea Turtle Society is to promote understanding, appreciation, and value of sea turtles and their habitats through the exchange and sharing of information, techniques, ideas, and inspiration that will promote actions from local to global levels, for the advancement of sea turtle biology and conservation.

About The International Sea Turtle Society has been a registered non-profit organization (501(c)(3) since February 1996. It convenes a uniquely important International Sea Turtle Symposium that brings people together from all around the world each year (more than 1000 people from approximately 80 countries). Since 1981 this community of sea turtle biologists, conservationists, educators, and advocates has gathered to share knowledge, build capacity, network and collaborate and ultimately, to leverage conservation.

Symposium attendees have been able to promote their research network with others working in their field and train future sea turtle biologists and conservationists. In the past decade, the Symposium focus has broadened to include social science, education, and grassroots conservation efforts. The Symposium also promotes conservation advocacy through developing Symposium Resolutions that describe the Society membership’s ideas about emerging conservation themes. These resolutions are carefully and thoughtfully drafted, and then directed to national governments, international wildlife management organizations, and other conservation entities around the world.

Participation at the Symposium continues to grow, bringing together over 800 people at more recent annual gatherings. The geographical scope has also widened, from being a primarily US-based event in the early years to one that now includes members from half of the world’s countries. The background of participants has also diversified to incorporate government officials, students, the general public, activists, and advocacy groups, biologists, researchers, veterinarians, policy-makers, and more, to form an ever-increasing number of people with a matching variety of ideas, with the common goal of ensuring the survival of these endangered animals.

The Symposium is a great opportunity to meet colleagues, learn about the latest research, and discuss ways to solve common problems. We recognize that by forging partnerships we can have a greater influence on the future. We are diverse in our cultures, national origins, professions, ages, and experiences. This diversity makes us stronger. By sharing our vision and knowledge, our mission becomes more reachable.

The International Sea Turtle Society is governed by a Board of Directors (BoD) who are elected by the membership. They are your representatives and are dedicated to the goals and mission of the Society. Look out for their identifying badges at the next Symposium; feel free to go up and talk to them about your Society and any suggestions you may have to help develop it. The BoD need and want to hear from you. Keep the Society vital by sharing your ideas and concerns with them.

Country/Region: Sri Lanka

Earthlanka Youth Network organization started running in 2009. We were the first youth ever to do a side event in a COP UNFCCC for Sri Lanka, and we carried out a campaign for UNFCCC called the Make It Green Again campaign, producing a nature song from Sri Lanka.

Our organization started another project on conserving marine resources in Sri-Lanka where a young research team was trained to monitor, educate, and engage communities for marine conservation. This project, known as Poseidon Army, was initiated for the Marine Research & Conservation program, a cohort of youth who will work towards community development in coastal areas, bringing concerns on sustainable development in Sri Lanka, uplifting the tourism industry & engaging in Action planning at the national level on marine resources. The youth co-group was working with local and international marine researchers for conservation efforts and to establish marine sanctuaries.

Since 2015, this youth team has been working voluntarily and has continued activities in the Southern, Western, and Eastern coastal belts in the country. All the youth members are PADI certified and trained in Coastal and Marine Ecology restoration, Community-based ocean Education, Coastal and Reef debris cleaning, Developing TOT for School Teachers in Marine Education, Blue Flag Beach implementation, Local Fishery Harbor Management, Maintaining turtle hatcheries, Empowering women in ocean science, ocean-based research, policy and advocacy.

African Bioacoustics Community

Category: Ocean Professionals

Country/Region: Africa; South Africa

Bioacoustic research from Africa and by African scientists is not well represented in the global field and thus the African Bioacoustics Community strives to shine a light on the achievements of bioacoustics research in Africa. We work towards equal representation, access to crucial learning and networking opportunities, and providing an environment where information flows freely between scientists, research labs, countries, and continents. Sustainability and minimizing our carbon footprint is something we value highly and we work hard to ensure that our events are sustainable, plastic-free and carbon responsible. As part of our effort in this matter, we ask that members of our community consider carbon-offsetting measures or donating to a cause that aligns with our values.
